POOL: RedTire Finance Analyst Intern
Position Overview
RedTire is a KU School of Business venture designed to enhance the economic wellbeing of Kansas and the surrounding states. The program finds the most suitably qualified candidate buyers to match with a successful small- to medium-sized business to prevent the shuttering of the business due to a lack of owner successor. RedTire assists in successfully transitioning the business to new ownership and relies on student interns during the financial analysis and valuation modelling part of the process.
The intern’s first objective is to provide assistance to the RedTire Director so quality business and technical consulting assistance to RedTire clients is provided. The second objective is to provide an excellent experiential learning opportunity. The intern will work ‘live real-world’ case scenarios to successfully transition a business from a retiring owner, by redefining their retirement, to a new younger owner. Ideal candidates will continue in the role for two years with increasing wage paid to returning students, commensurate with experience.

- Applying academic valuation techniques to a live company and learning other small business valuation techniques that are not generally taught in the academic accounting or finance classroom.
- Obtaining direct experience and insight into how the deal process works.
- Gaining valuable experience in dealing with project-related work.
- Location: Capitol Federal Hall, B-School Suite 1186, Lawrence, KS.
- Paid internship at a minimum starting rate of $10 / hour for the 6-month training period, and quickly increasing with experience and responsibility. Higher hourly rate will be paid to interns returning to the role their second year.
- Flexible hours, Monday through Friday, ±10-20 hours per week during the semester.
- If candidate works over the winter or summer or winter recess, hours could be up to 40 hours per week.
- POOL position for up to 10 Interns for the 2023/2024 Academic Year.
Job Description
- Assist with day-to-day administration of RedTire.
- Help with leads for candidate business (sellers) and buyers for inclusion in the program.
- Extrapolate raw financial data (from tax returns and company P&L’s) into RedTire models.
- Perform business valuation analyses using established models and procedures.
- Help with industry, location, and market research initiatives.
- Other ad-hoc financial and modelling analysis duties as required.
Required Qualifications
- Basic knowledge and understanding of finance, accounting procedures and financial analysis as evidenced in application materials.
- Detail-orientated, methodical in analyzing data (like tax information), and ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments as evidenced in application materials.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills as evidenced in application materials.
- Completion of base-level finance and/or accounting courses to provide the theoretical background required for the job.
- Experience in MS Word & MS Excel as evidenced in application materials.
- Current KU Business student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefer business undergraduate with finance or accounting tracks or MACC or MBA student.
