Research Assistant - Mandarin
Position Overview
The Speech in Little Bilinguals Lab (SLBL) at KU is seeking a Mandarin-speaking student researcher for an on-campus position starting Summer 2025 or earlier. This role is ideal for students looking to gain hands-on experience while supporting research and/or community-based initiatives.

Job Description
- Support faculty or research projects related to Mandarin-speaking populations including interviewing families and administering speech and language tests to children aged 3-6 (50%).
- Assist with translation and transcription of Mandarin and English materials (30%).
- Engage with Mandarin-speaking families in the Kansas City metropolitan area/Lawrence as needed (10%).
- Perform administrative and organizational tasks as assigned (10%).
Required Qualifications
- Must speak and write Mandarin fluently.
- Must be able to commit 10 hours per week.
- Must be available to work in person beginning Summer 2025 or earlier.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)
Preferred Qualifications
- Having a means of transportation to travel within and between the Kansas City metropolitan area and Lawrence is preferred but not required.
- Major in Speech-Language-Hearing (SPLH), Linguistics, Psychology, Education, Applied Behavioral Science, Anthropology, allied health fields, or a related field.
- Experience with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and/or transcribing speech.
- Experience working with children and/or special populations.
