Resource Center Office Assistant - Student Hourly


Position Overview

The William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications has an opening for a student assistant in the Resource Center. This is a front desk position and includes assisting with a variety of office duties.

Work location: University of Kansas, Lawrence: Stauffer-Flint Hall

Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

Job Description

The student assistant’s role is to provide excellent customer service to J-School students, faculty, staff, and visitors at the front desk. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Accurately check out a large volume of equipment
  • Greeting visitors
  • Resolving and/or referring inquiries
  • Updating documents
  • Checking inventory
  • Photocopying
  • Sorting mail
  • Answering phone calls

  • Running errands
  • Helping with office moves
  • Stuffing envelopes
10%
  • Setting up for events
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  1. Two or more years of experience with Microsoft Word and Excel, as demonstrated in application materials.
  2. Able to commit to a set schedule and open to school’s need for occasional extra hours, as stated in application materials.
  3. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. One year of previous experience working in an office environment.
  2. Dependable, organized, detail oriented, demonstrates initiative, and has a positive attitude.
  3. Must have a good work ethic and be self-driven to complete tasks.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work collegially with others.
