Sanders Scholar in African Diasporic Work - Student Hourly


Position Overview

A project seeking to develop a blueprint of information needs, that can represent the diaspora in their pilgrimage to the motherland of Africa. Interested applicants will assist the Librarian for Africana and International Studies in working towards developing a web application to collect data from the African American diaspora, especially those who plan to visit the continent of Africa (the motherland) for the first time.

Job Description

  • Searching KU libraries, and other websites to get data on the diaspora project
  • Scanning African governments' websites to get background information on the project
  • Scanning other relevant websites to get related data
  • Conducting a lterature review of the project
  • Transcribing interviews collected from participants

Required Qualifications

  1. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
  2. Demonstrated interest in learning about the diasporic project.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated ability to use library resources (e.g., library online catalog and other electronic databases).
  2. Knowledge about the continent of Africa.
  3. Experience conducting interviews with individuals.
  4. Ability to transcribe audio and video interviews in English.

Advertised Salary Range

$15.00 per hour

Work Schedule

Approximately 10 - 15 hours weekly between 8am - 5pm, Monday thru Friday.
