Social Media Content Creator (KU Creator) - Student Hourly


Position Overview

KU Marketing is seeking creative, strategic, and passionate students to join our team of KU Creators and help represent KU on social media. This position is ideal for students interested in social media marketing, content creation, photography, videography, digital storytelling, communications, or journalism.

As a KU Creator, you'll work closely with KU's team of student content creators and professional communicators to help manage the university's flagship social media channels. From developing creative content and engaging with our online community to monitoring trends, publishing content, and analyzing performance, you'll gain hands-on experience with every stage of social media marketing while helping showcase what it means to be a Jayhawk. This position requires a passion for the University of Kansas and an eagerness to share that with other Jayhawks around the world.

Job Description

30% - Content Creation
  • Create engaging photo, video, and written content for KU’s flagship social media channels.
  • Capture campus events, student life, and KU experiences through photography, videography and creative storytelling.
  • Collaborate with the other student content creators and our editorial, digital media, and design teams to create original content for various social platforms.
25% - Social Strategy & Content Planning
  • With fellow student creators, plan and develop content around university events, academic milestones, traditions and brand campaigns.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute creative content ideas.
  • Research emerging platform trends and recommend opportunities to keep KU’s social presence fresh and engaging.
25% - Community & Inbox Management
  • Monitor KU's social media inbox and respond to comments, tags, mentions, and direct messages using established brand guidelines.
  • Engage with conversations across social media to help foster a positive online community.
  • Escalate sensitive issues or questions to the appropriate members of the social media team.
15% - Publishing & Scheduling
  • Assist with scheduling and publishing content across multiple social media platforms.
  • Ensure content is formatted appropriately for each platform and follows accessibility and brand standards.
  • Help maintain the editorial calendar and publishing schedule.
5% - Reporting & Analytics
  • Monitor content performance using social media analytics tools.
  • Assist with preparing weekly, monthly, and campaign performance reports.
  • Use audience insights and performance data to recommend improvements for future content and campaigns.

Required Qualifications

  1. Coursework or work experience that illustrates strong attention to detail and organizational skills, as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Evidence of strong communication & content creation skills demonstrated in application materials.
  3. Experience in social media strategy, content creation, or similar field, as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Previous work experience which required a working knowledge of major social media platforms, as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Coursework or work experience demonstrating ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines, as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated ability to take direction and work independently while also being responsive and accessible during your assigned work hours, as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Previous work experience which required being a team player with self-initiative, a strong work ethic, and a positive and collaborative attitude, as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Demonstrated ability to identify successful social content, and adapt social media voice for different audiences, as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Experience with photography and videography, as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Experience creating & editing short-form video for social media, as evidenced by application materials.
  6. Experience with Adobe Express, or similar creative software, as evidenced by application materials.
  7. Previous work experience with appearing and speaking on camera for content, as evidenced by application materials.
  8. Experience managing social media channels and creating content for multiple platforms, as evidenced by application materials.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
