Student Assistant
Position Overview
The KU Center for Online and Distance Learning serve faculty and staff who develop and deliver online and hybrid courses. Our focus is to facilitate KU’s strategic goals for expanding online learning by providing pedagogy and technology expertise in support of teaching and learning.
The Student Assistant plays a key role in supporting the delivery of accessible online learning experiences. This position is primarily responsible for transcribing, editing, and captioning audio and video content for online courses. Additional responsibilities include proctoring midterm and final exams and creating accessible digital documents such as PDFs, Word files, and PowerPoint presentations to ensure compliance with accessibility standards.

Job Description
- 70% - Assist Media Production Staff – Transcribe, edit, and caption multimedia content for online course delivery.
- 20% - Assist Instructional Design Staff – Format accessible course materials across various digital platforms.
- 10% - Assist Exam Coordinator – Proctor midterm and final exams. Occasional evening hours are required during Finals Week.
Required Qualifications
- Prior experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Canvas and web browsers as shown in application materials.
- Excellent communication skills and strong command of the English language, including correct spelling, grammar and punctuation as evidenced by application materials.
- Prior experience demonstrating strong attention to detail as shown in application materials.
- Customer/student service experience.
- Must be able to work in 2-3 hour time blocks.
- Must be able to work occasional evenings during finals week.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience demonstrating proofreading skills as shown in application materials.
- Transcription experience – ability to proficiently and accurately type what you hear.
- Clerical experience.
Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
