Student Communications Director, Center for Community Outreach


Position Overview

This position oversees promotion and outreach activities for the Center for Community Outreach (CCO). The Communications Director leads promotion of CCO programs and opportunities across campus departments, including academic departments, student organizations, and more. This position serves as a member of the CCO’s Executive Staff.

Hiring, weekly hour maximum, and hourly rate of pay are contingent on KU Student Senate funding.

Job Description

Social Media and Web Content Creation – 55%
  • Oversee each program’s social media posts and aid in the promotion of programs through the main accounts of the Center for Community Outreach (CCO).
  • Maintain and update the CCO website and social media sites.
  • Promote the CCO and all its programs and events utilizing social media, especially Instagram and CMS Sunflower, to increase volunteering.
  • Maintaining the CCO brand in conjunction with the Creative Director.
20% - Community and Campus Outreach
  • Communicate with on campus departments via email/social media at events to promote upcoming volunteering events.
  • Develop press releases following major CCO events like Super Service Saturday and Trunk or Treat.
  • Distribute a biweekly newsletter highlighting upcoming volunteering events and recurring volunteering opportunities.
  • Serve as the primary contact for local media including the University Daily Kansan, the Lawrence Journal World, The Lawrence Times, KJHK radio station, and other news outlets.
Executive Staff Collaboration – 20%
  • Attend a weekly Peer Advising meeting with the Executive and Creative Directors.
  • Attend CCO Executive Staff meetings every week.
  • Attend CCO Advisory Board meetings once a semester to report position updates.
  • Work collaboratively with all executive staff to evaluate progress and set goals for the CCO.
  • Report directly to the Executive Director and Managing Director.
5%- Additional relevant tasks and projects as determined throughout the term

Required Qualifications

  1. Evidenced commitment to community outreach and service.
  2. Ability to lead and work with teams as evidenced in application material.
  3. Ability to work collaboratively with others as evidenced in application material.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Previous experience working with the Center for Community Outreach.
  2. Previous experience with website management, specifically with CMS Sunflower.
  3. Previous experience with social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Linktree.
  4. Ability to demonstrate professional verbal and written communication skills.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
