Student Community Action Corps-The Voter Network-Student Hourly


Position Overview

***This position is for Summer 2023 only***

The Student Community Action Corps Program facilitates the engagement of KU students with various community organizations, programs, or support in community-engaged efforts. Student employees will support their partner organization and/or program with various tasks and projects while receiving monthly training and support from Center for Service Learning staff.

The Civic Engagement Associate will work with key team members at The Voter Network, a Kansas-based nonprofit organization, and with the Kansas African American Affairs Commission, based in the Kansas Governor’s office, to map civic engagement and voting trends, specifically among high school students and with Black Kansans. They will also help identify, recruit, and train individuals and organizations that can help positively impact voter turnout rates with young voters. The Civic Engagement Associate will also commit to using our, nonpartisan Voter to Voter program to make sure at least 25 people in their own personal network are informed and ready to vote in local school board and city elections this year.

Job Description

The Student Community Action Corps member will:
  • Assist in collecting, inputting, and analyzing Kansas data related to youth voter registration and turnout in local, state, and federal elections
  • Help build a database of Black-led organizations for the purpose of connecting a network of local leaders
  • Identify and track any notable metrics beyond voter registration and turnout
  • Develop a statewide list of community organizations, educators, and student groups interested in high school civic engagement efforts and initiate partnership when appropriate
  • Participate in developing tools, messaging, materials, and methods to support high school voter registration efforts
  • Recruit and support youth-led Voter to Voter teams, while also supporting 25 friends through the 2023, local election voting process

Required Qualifications

  • Student employees must be Federal Work Study-eligible.
  • The student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 12 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 12 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. For the fall semester, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 12 credit hours.
  • Excellent and accurate typing skills as evident of application material
  • excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to complete projects independently with attention to detail as evident of the application material
  • Basic experience with general office work and use of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Excel)
  • Adaptability and flexibility to new tasks, settings, and opportunities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest and passion for community service, civic engagement, advocacy, social justice, etc.
  • Responsibility and personal accountability for completing tasks; attention to details and deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and work in new areas to support team efforts.
