Student Grader and Tutor for Ecology

Position Overview

Grading coursework and assisting with answering student questions.

The student assistant will help with grading online discussions and graphs for an online, remotely taught ecology course for non-science majors. Assistant will provide feedback about why a student lost points and how to address the discussion questions correctly. The exact number of hours per week, and the scope of the work will be determined by the student and the supervisor.
The student assistant may be an undergraduate or graduate student. (Note: this position does not constitute a GRA/GTA/GA appointment. However, University rules state that domestic students holding a 50% GTA are eligible to work up to 9/hours per week as a student hourly). Anticipated employment dates: 10/19/2023-3/10/2024

Job Description

The student hourly:
  1. Grading student coursework (online discussions and graphing exercises).
  2. Assisting students with questions, understanding grading, and providing feedback on weekly discussion and graphing exercises.
  3. Communications support (monitoring course emails, answering routine student questions).
  4. Record-keeping.

Required Qualifications

  1. Grade of “A” or “B” in at least one course in Ecology or equivalent experience
  2. Good written communication skills
  3. At least Junior status
  4. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prior teaching or grading experience
  2. Graduate student in good standing
  3. Previous coursework in environmental studies or a related field
