Student Hourly-Entry Level IT Technician
Position Overview
The IT Help Desk is dedicated to fostering and strengthening relationships within the KU community. We achieve this by providing timely and accurate information in every interaction, ensuring that each user receives the support they need—even when the information may not be what they expect or want to hear.
Job Description
100% - Campus Technology Support:
- Provide frontline technical support by triaging and responding to incoming requests via phone, email, in-person, and chat, ensuring prompt and effective assistance.
- Diagnose and resolve issues across Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices, supporting services offered by KU IT and other campus partners.
- Maintain security and confidentiality by adhering to all federal regulations (including FERPA) and departmental policies related to account and data protection.
- Document support activities by creating and updating service tickets with clear, detailed notes to ensure accurate tracking and timely resolution.
- Assist with departmental initiatives, including special projects, administrative reporting, and additional duties assigned by leadership.
- Support personal and university‑provided devices, delivering high‑quality technical assistance to enhance the user experience across campus.
Required Qualifications
- Previous customer service experience demonstrating professionalism and a strong commitment to user support.
- Demonstrated strong problem‑solving abilities, including the skill to ask clear, targeted, and effective questions as evidenced by application materials.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced through application materials and experience.
- Availability to work mornings and afternoons, with some evening and weekend shifts required, as evidenced by application materials. (See more about student tech support hours at: technology.ku.edu/tech-support-students)
- Demonstrated ability to work at least 10 hours per week during the academic semester as evidenced by application materials, with opportunities to work up to 20 hours based on student preference and staffing needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated background/familiarity with the KU environment and the online services provided by KU IT as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience with basic hardware and software troubleshooting across common device types.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Windows, macOS, and iOS operating systems as evidenced by application materials.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience using Microsoft Outlook for email, calendaring, and communication.
- Previous experience with audio/visual equipment, including setup, use, and basic troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, while effectively managing multiple tasks and maintaining focus as evidenced by application materials.
Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
