Student Hourly - Pardee AAC Lab Fellow


Position Overview

The Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic provides speech-language pathology and audiology services to the KU, Lawrence, and surrounding communities. The Pardee AAC Research and Resource Library hosts many of the current augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices and supports KU students and the surrounding community. The Pardee AAC Lab fellow provides direct and indirect support to clinical professors, KU undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing, the clients/families of the Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. The Pardee AAC Lab fellow will provide support, as outlined below, in a professional manner. The Pardee AAC Lab fellow is expected to be polite, dependable, independent, collaborative, and possess an interest in AAC.

Job Description

The Pardee AAC Lab Fellow will:
  1. Maintenance of Loaner devices (10%)
    1. Coordinate with faculty advisors to determine what loaner devices are needed
    2. Communicate with company representatives cc’ing faculty to obtain loaner devices
    3. Receive shipments (coordination with front desk assistant)
    4. Update AAC Lab calendar with date loaner devices need to be returned
  2. Cleaning/device maintenance (25%)
    1. Check the lab to make sure device as are all appropriately charging
    2. Clean devices with cleaning solution and directions posted under the sink
  3. Provide technical support to students (25%)
    1. Advertise times lab will have fellow support
    2. Assist students in preparing for AAC assessments
    3. Maintain and check the AAC lab problem log
  4. Maintain device competency forms (10%)
  5. Maintain record of lab attendance (10%)
  6. Other duties as requested by faculty (10%)
  7. Attend scheduled monthly meetings and communicate with lab co-directors (10%)

Required Qualifications

The Pardee AAC Lab Fellow should possess:
  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Attention to detail.
  3. Basic computer skills.
  4. Strong organizational skills.
  5. An interest or foundation in AAC
  6. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Customer service experience.
  2. Experience communicating with people with different abilities (e.g., hearing loss, disabilities, etc.)
  3. Experience with AAC devices.
