Student Hourly Research Assistant


Position Overview

The KU School of Public Affairs & Administration (SPAA) is accepting applications for a student assistant who will provide support to Dr. Joel Mendez. Duties include survey administration and other duties as assigned.

Job Description

Joel Mendez, Assistant Professor in the School of Public Affairs & Administration, is seeking four students to assist in evaluating the impact of fare-free transit on the mobility of transit users. Students will assist in administering surveys at bus stops and on transit vehicles in Lawrence, KS, and the greater Kansas City area. Travel to survey collection sites will be arranged by Dr. Mendez. Students may also aid in survey data entry efforts.

80% - Administer Surveys

20% - Complete clerical/administrative tasks

Required Qualifications

  1. At least one year experience with Word and Excel
  2. Ability to communicate effectively, as evidenced in application materials
  3. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a master’s degree or graduate degree in Urban Planning, Sociology, Public Administration or Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies
  • Intermediate-level proficiency with Word and Excel
  • Fluent in Spanish
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally over the phone and e-mail
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
