Position Overview

Overview: The Center for Orientation and Transition Programs works to assist students with their transition to the University of Kansas. The function of an Orientation Assistant (OA) is to serve as a member of the Center for Orientation and Transition Programs and further our mission to help students discover, engage, and belong at the University of Kansas.

Job Description

Duties and Expectations:
The function of the Orientation Assistant (OA) position is to serve as a member of the Center for Orientation & Transition Programs staff and work toward the goal of assisting new students with their academic, social, and personal transition to the University of Kansas. Orientation Assistants initiate and develop positive relationships and maintain open communication with students and guests at orientation programs and throughout students’ first year at KU. OAs provide information about life at KU, including campus involvement opportunities, academic departments and resources, services, campus facilities, policies, and procedures. OAs offer new students an opportunity to connect with current KU students and foster intellectual engagement and belonging at the University of Kansas. At orientation, they facilitate small group discussions and activities for incoming students, familiarize new students with the diverse communities that make up the university, and lead I am KU.

Orientation Assistants also serve as an ongoing resource for current KU students by serving as ambassadors for other Center for Orientation & Transition programs initiatives including Hawk Week, Sophomore September, and Winter Welcome. During the academic year, OAs work as our frontline customer service staff, answering phone calls, responding to emails, and assisting in other administrative tasks.

The OA position is a year-round role. Orientation Assistants are expected to work Orientation, Hawk Week, additional Transition Programs, and in the office throughout the academic year. OAs work approximately 40 hours per week in the Summer and will work 5-15 hours per week in the Academic Year.

Required Qualifications

  • Available Summer 2023 (OAs are required to be present during the Summer Orientation program. OAs are prohibited from taking in-person courses, but online enrollment is welcome. In addition, time away and conflicting employment is prohibited during training and Summer Orientation), Hawk Week, and other Orientation and Transition Program events.
  • Undergraduate student standing (sophomore, junior, or senior status by Fall 2023; students preferred who can work through May 2024)
  • Minimum GPA requirement of 2.5
  • Experience with mentorship and leadership as demonstrated in application materials
  • Strong written communication, organization and time management skills as demonstrated in application materials.
  • Prior experience working and thriving on a diverse team as demonstrated in application materials

Advertised Salary Range

$11.25/hour; other compensation includes Orientation and Hawk Week attire, recreation pass, and summer student health fee paid.
