Student Hourly - Web Developer


Position Overview

The student hourly position will support the KU Information Technology web team with website maintenance, accessibility improvements, content updates, and site migration work. This role is intended for a student interested in gaining hands-on experience with web content management, accessibility standards, user experience, and front-end web support.

The student will assist with editing and reviewing web pages, updating links and documents, checking content for accessibility and accuracy, and following established procedures within KU’s web tools and ticketing processes. Work may include helping prepare sites for migration, reviewing page structure, assisting with accessible PDF updates, documenting completed changes, and communicating with campus partners as needed.

​​​​​​​This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to follow technical instructions, and a willingness to learn new systems such as content management platforms, file management tools, and accessibility review processes. The student will collaborate with members of the web team to support accurate, accessible, and user-friendly KU websites.

Job Description

​​​​​​75% - Website Migration & CMS Build Support
  • Assist full-time staff with migrating existing campus websites into the KU Sunflower CMS. Duties include rebuilding pages, transferring and formatting content, updating links, placing images and documents, reviewing page structure, and helping ensure migrated sites meet KU web, accessibility, and content standards.
10% - Website Maintenance & Development Support
  • Assist campus staff with designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining websites in the KU Sunflower CMS. This may include routine content updates, layout adjustments, navigation updates, and general site maintenance.
10% - Web Support & Troubleshooting
  • Assist in providing service and support to campus staff for web-related technical issues. Duties may include troubleshooting CMS questions, reviewing reported site issues, documenting completed fixes, and escalating more complex requests to full-time staff when needed.
5% - CMS Training & Documentation Support
  • Assist with basic training and documentation for campus staff using the KU Sunflower CMS, including helping explain editing workflows, content entry practices, and standard CMS procedures.

Required Qualifications

  1. Strong attention to detail when editing web pages, links, and documents, as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Experience in learning and following technical procedures in new tools (e.g., CMS, ticketing system, file management tools), as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Basic experience creating or editing content in common tools such as Word, Google Docs, or similar applications, as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Excellent communication skills for working with campus partners and documenting changes, as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and follow established standards and checklists, as evidenced by application materials.
  6. Demonstrated interest in web content, accessibility, or user experience (through coursework, personal projects, or prior experience), as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience using a web content management system (e.g., Drupal, WordPress, or similar), as evidenced by application materials.
  2. Basic familiarity with HTML and web page structure (headings, lists, links, images), as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Experience or coursework related to accessibility, UX, or web design, as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Experience editing or creating accessible PDFs (tags, headings, reading order, alt text) using tools such as Adobe Acrobat, as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Prior experience working in a ticketing or help desk environment, or similar customer service role, as evidenced by application materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to follow technical documentation, checklists, or standards with a high degree of accuracy, as evidenced by application materials.
  7. Interest in building a portfolio or gaining professional experience in web, accessibility, or front-end work, as evidenced by application materials.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.

(3) Student employee must be able to work approximately 10–20 hours per week during regular business hours.
