Director of Social Justice-Student Hourly
Position Overview
The University of Kansas Student Senate is the primary advocate for students on campus. As one of higher education's finest models of self-governance, 110 senators and 11 executive staff members work together to allocate about $25 million in student fees in ways that best serve students. Student Senate also represents the KU student voice within University, State, and National Governance, working to address and develop policy in students' best interests.
Job Description
The Social Justice Director shall have the following job responsibilities:
- Advocating on behalf of the needs of typically marginalized and/or underrepresented students. Typically marginalized and/or underrepresented students include, but are not limited to, students of color, students with physical and/or psychological disabilities, gender, sexuality, and/or romantic minority students, international students, non-traditional students, religious minority students, and first generation students, as well as both employees and students.
- Ensuring that all typically marginalized and/or underrepresented students feel safe and included on campus.
- Finding mechanisms for receiving and disseminating information regarding events and opportunities of typically marginalized and/or underrepresented students.
- Reporting regularly to the Student Executive Council and the Student’s Assembly on the state of typically marginalized and/or underrepresented students at the University of Kansas.
- Gathering, compiling, and presenting to the Student Executive Council and the Student’s Assembly, a report on the concerns and suggestions to improve student life for typically marginalized and/or underrepresented students.
- Monitoring the effectiveness of legal, health, childcare, support, and/or financial services relevant for typically marginalized and/or underrepresented students at the University of Kansas.
- Working with Student Senate members, committees, and boards to help represent typically underrepresented students’ needs at the university, local, state, and national levels.
- Fostering and maintaining Student Senate’s relationship with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Office of Diversity & Equity, the Center for Sexuality & Gender Diversity, the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity, the Office of Institutional Opportunity & Access, Academic Achievement and Access Center, International Student Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and any others deemed necessary.
- Fostering Student Senate’s relationship with Headquarters, Willow Domestic Violence Center, and the Sexual Trauma and Abuse Care Center.
- The Social Justice Director serves as an ex-officio member on the Student Council on Social Justice.
- Create social media content that increases awareness of multicultural and diversity related events, celebrations, organizations, etc.
- Organize events promoting multicultural awareness.
- Reach out to multicultural organizations and inform them of the resources within the Student Senate and the campus at large.
- Invite guest speakers to talk about how to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion within the Student Senate and in society in general.
Required Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at KU in the Fall and Spring of semesters.
- Available on Wednesday nights from 5pm-10pm for Student Senate meetings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with Student Senate
- Familiarity with social justice ideologies and work..
- Experience in research academically/professionally.
- Ability to work with a variety of student organizations and students from/with diverse backgrounds across campus.
