Position Overview
The Trans Studies at the Commons Fellowship assistant will assist with the yearlong fellowship program, providing research support, assembling course materials, updating the fellowship’s website, creating flyers or other social media graphics, and providing tech support and meeting assistance. This position will also provide office and administrative support for the department of Womens, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. This is a part-time (.125 FTE) benefits ineligible position.
Successful candidates will demonstrate strong attention to detail, strong computer skills, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as being self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team. This position will require the ability to multitask, think creatively, solve problems, and use discretion in handling confidential information.

With funding from the Mellon Foundation, KU faculty are building a fellowship program for scholars, artists, and activists working inside and through trans studies and communities nationwide. Job Description
60% - Class preparations
- Supports the operations of the fellowship program.
- Prepares fellowship readings by locating or scanning articles.
- Collates and sends out readings.
- Assists with the updating of internal fellow website with fellowship materials and scholar resources.
- Creates and provides tech assistance for virtual meetings.
- Assists with faculty or fellow research questions.
- Answers and forwards questions
- Supports the production of content for website and social media accounts.
- Creates promotional pieces for social media, flyers, and email marketing.
- Supports the production of brochures and advertising for the fellowship program.
- Supports events and provides coverage where needed.
- Takes photographs and writes up small articles on events relevant to the program.
- Updates email and mailing lists for announcements.
- Attends occasional meetings.
- Prepares and sends out minutes.
- Proofreads and edits documents and social media posts.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of one year of experience in general office, clerical and/or administrative support work.
- Previous computer skills with a PC/Windows and/or Mac as demonstrated by application materials and previous experience.
- Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail as demonstrated by application materials.
- Knowledge of WGSS Initiatives, with strong interest in trans studies demonstrated by academic or community experience.
- During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Microsoft (Outlook, Word, Excel), Canva, Mailchimp, Google Drive, and Instagram.
- Previous experience working independently and in a team environment with a variety of staff.
- Knowledge of practices and trends in trans studies.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Previous work environment that required the ability to multi-task and set priorities.
