Student HourlyGen Chem Undergraduate Lab Technician
Position Overview
Undergraduate lab techs are primarily responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of all laboratories and prep/storage areas and supplies. Students enrolled in general chemistry laboratory are usually freshman or transfer students who are just beginning their degree programs at KU so particular care must be taken to provide comprehensive technical support to achieve the most seamless and safe student experience.
Position Competencies:
All duties will be performed in accordance with instruction from supervisor(s), Departments, and/or Schools and in adherence to University and Board of Regents policies.
Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

- Learning Ability – demonstrates the ability to learn new content efficiently and effectively; effectively utilizes course technologies (e.g., Canvas, PowerPoint, Excel, laboratory hardware and software, etc.); responds to constructive feedback.

Job Description
- 80% Lab Upkeep – Conduct room checks between lab sessions. Ensure the lab space is clean. Facilitate waste collection and disposal. Return chemicals and materials to appropriate locations after experiments are complete. Clean all equipment and supplies after use.
- 10% Lab Preparation – Prepare chemical solutions and assemble, organize, and label materials as needed for the upcoming experiments.
- 10% Additional Course Support – Troubleshoot equipment and experiment issues.
Required Qualifications
- During the term of the appointment the individual 1) is admitted and enrolled in coursework as a KU undergraduate, 2) is enrolled in no less than six credit hours, 3) is in good academic standing and making satisfactory progress towards the completion of their degree, 4) has satisfied all English proficiency criteria established by the Regents and/or the University, 5) meets the conditions of employment as specified in the University/KAPE Memorandum of Agreement, 6) meets Department-specific requirements and qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate student in Chemistry or a related field who has completed CHEM 130/135 (or equivalent courses)

Work Schedule
Undergraduate lab techs are expected to work 4 - 10 hours per week. Specifics regarding the expected in-person work schedule will be discussed with the General Chemistry Lab Director at the beginning of the semester of appointment.
