Student Social Media Manager


Position Overview

The Student Engagement Center (SEC) at the University of Kansas serves as a hub for student involvement, leadership development, impact programs and resources, and community programs. Through the Student Engagement Center, KU students deepen their connection to each other and KU by exploring communities and opportunities to thrive during their Jayhawk experience. Students will engage through registered student organizations, leadership experiences, and professional development workshops. The Center will impact students by providing for direct needs in the Campus Cupboard, Pregnant and Parenting Pantry, clothing closets, and the Emergency Aid Network. Jayhawks will build community as they connect with peers and engage in student support programs. The Student Engagement Center enhances existing programs by providing greater resources and deeper connections across Student Affairs.

The Student Social Media Manager is responsible for utilizing major social media platforms to help convey the overall voice and brand of the Student Engagement Center via engaging content that highlights student voices, displays the many offerings of the center and fosters online engagement with KU Students. This will be done by creating and planning social content, performing daily engagement, gathering analytic data, and working with SEC full-time staff to collaborate on marketing campaigns as needed.

Job Description

50% - Social Media Management
  • Content Creation & Scheduling: Developing and posting, including on-camera appearances for videos.
  • Engagement & Community Management: Responding to comments/DMs, interacting with students, and managing social channels daily.
  • Strategy & Planning: Creating content calendars, planning campaigns for events, writing content/scripts for posts and following university brand guidelines.
  • Analytics & Reporting: Tracking metrics (likes, shares, engagement rates) and reporting on performance.
  • Trend Monitoring: Staying updated on popular (and appropriate) trends and memes to keep content relevant.
  • Event Coverage: Providing live, on-site social media coverage of campus events.
30% - Student Outreach & Engagement
  • Network with student organization social channels to share relevant content.
  • Plan social campaigns and coordinate special social projects.
  • Assist with brainstorming of original content and campaigns.
15% - Administration
  • Manage and respond to requests for social media collaboration/posting.
  • Helping create a process for request that allows for proper turnaround/posting times.
5% - Other Duties as Assigned

Required Qualifications

  1. Strong writing, photography, and video editing skills.
  2. Experience with and knowledge of social media.
  3. Strong organizational skills & good time management.
  4. Ability to work independently and with a team.
  5. Ability to think both creatively and strategically.
  6. Passion for storytelling, community engagement, and student life.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Portfolio/Examples to display past work displaying graphic design examples/past social media accounts that have been worked on/content creation/photography/videography skills.
  2. Experience with photography, video, or graphic design.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR. (2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
