Tutor McNair Scholar - Student Hourly


Position Overview

The KU TRIO McNair Scholars Program offers a variety of services and resources that assist students with preparing for graduate school and successfully completing graduate applications. McNair Scholars are KU undergraduates who represent a variety of disciplines, but all share a common desire to conduct research and pursue a graduate degree. As part of KU’s Center for Educational Opportunity Programs, our mission is to expand the academic and research fields by preparing low-income, first-generation, and disadvantaged KU undergraduate students for their Ph.D. Our dedicated and experienced staff provide a welcoming, supportive, and inspiring place for students who are aspiring to go to graduate school.

The ideal candidate will present a professional demeanor, have excellent verbal and written communication, and tutoring skills. The ability to work independently and pay attention to details is important. Overall, we are seeking a team member with great interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to follow through with tutoring assignments.

Job Description

  • 95% - Provide academic tutoring for McNair Scholars in various subjects and preparing for tutoring sessions.
  • 5% - Documentation of tutoring sessions, monitor tutor progress and provide ongoing feedback to supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  1. KU student must be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours each semester during the academic year. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
  2. Must have 9-12 hours in subject area and a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  3. Strong academic performance in the subject area as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Have taken the subject area and earned an “A”.
  2. Have a strong faculty and supervisor recommendation.
  3. Prior knowledge or experience in tutoring diverse populations.
  4. Experience communicating effectively with diverse populations.
