University Daily Kansan Editor


Position Overview

The Editors lead a student team of paid staff and/or volunteers in content generation for the University Daily Kansan student news organization. Responsibilities include making assignments to paid staff and volunteers, guiding and coaching staff through assignments and other duties, editing assignments for publication, monitoring events on campus and in Lawrence for breaking news, attending all planning meetings as assigned, updating news budgets, maintaining fresh content on the Kansan.com website, and other duties required for the University Daily Kansan to function as a daily news organization.

Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

Job Description

  • 40%: Making assignments to content generators.
  • 50%: Editing assignments made by content generators.
  • 10%: Attending meetings and training.

Required Qualifications

  1. Previous experience generating content for the University Daily Kansan, or equivalent experience at other publications.
  2. An application accepted by current University Daily Kansan editors or the University Daily Kansan advisory board.
  3. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)
