YES Student Tutor/Mentor Student Hourly


Position Overview

The Youth Educational Services (YES) Tutoring program hires KU students to work as tutors and mentors in local Lawrence public schools. Tutors provide before, during and after school tutoring services with kindergarten through high school students. We look for KU students in a variety of majors who have a strong dedication to helping youth and a desire to make a difference.

Per the State of Kansas, student employees may hold concurrent appointments not to exceed maximum appointment and hours worked levels. However, concurrent student appointments must be of matching FLSA designation (exempt/salaried or non-exempt/hourly).

Job Description

100% Assisting teachers in the Lawrence Public Schools (K-12) with tutoring needs.

Required Qualifications

  1. Must be a Kansas resident, paying in-state tuition at KU
  2. Must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA, or higher.
  3. Must be a sophomore or above in class year at KU
  4. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

  1. Previous experience working with children

Advertised Salary Range

$10.25 per hour

Work Schedule

Tutors will need to be available to work 1 to 4 hour blocks of time Monday-Friday between 8 am and 3 pm. Tutors will also have the option to work after school hours from 3-4:30 pm Monday-Friday.
