Pool - Lecturer


Position Overview

The Department of History invites qualified scholars and professionals to make application for part- to full-time lecturer and/or online lecturer positions for the development and/or instruction of online courses. Lecturers are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty. Positions vary and are dependent upon the need, if any, each semester for development and/or instruction of course(s). Primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. The appointment dates will vary based on the type of lecturer appointment and the timeframe for the preparation and instruction of the online course(s). Generally the appointments will be temporary.

Course needs vary in area of specialization, level, method of delivery (in person, online, hybrid).

Application materials will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for developing and/or teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in history consistent with departmental instructional needs.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Job Description

100% - Lecturer Duties
Teach a specified number of either undergraduate or graduate courses per semester. Courses may be undergraduate or graduate level and may be taught face-to-face, hybrid or online.
  • Teach one to four 3-hour courses as assigned by the Chair of the Department.
  • Responsibilities include planning and organization of the course(s), instruction throughout the semester (3 and/or 5 in-class hours per week), grading, submission of all relevant course records, and keep of office hours.
  • Hold regular office hours or consultation hours for students involved in classes taught, and be reasonably available to their inquiries via email and/or telephone outside of those scheduled hours.
  • Assume limited advising duties and attend in-service meetings designed to improve teaching as determined by the Department Chairperson
  • Administer assignments, tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Adhere to department, College, and University Policies. .

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in resume, and (3) information provided from professional references:

1. MA in History or a history-related field, for undergraduate courses; OR PhD is required for graduate courses.
2. Advanced training in history.
3. Effective teaching, as evidenced by letter of application.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Ph.D. preferred, with established record of successful teaching.
2. Evidence of scholarly excellence and collegiality.
