Graduate Writing Consultant - Student Hourly

Unit Overview:
The KU Writing Center (KUWC) offers programs and services to students, faculty and staff across writing levels and disciplines. At the University of Kansas, writing consultations are offered by trained graduates and undergraduates across multiple campus locations. The Writing Center is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program consisting of three unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Success.

Graduate writing consultants are peer educators who meet one-on-one with students to discuss writing projects in a variety of disciplines and genres. Graduate consultants collaborate with writers at any point in the writing process; teach strategies for researching, drafting, organizing, revising, and editing; and direct writers to resources. They also support other KUWC programming, like workshops and writing groups. Consultants bilingual in Spanish and English provide speaking and writing support in both languages as part of a pilot program with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Consultants are required to work in-person on the Lawrence campus.

Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
After one semester of service:
Continuing consultants may be interested in additional roles, including writing group facilitator and consultant development facilitator.
- Facilitate and foster student learning by asking questions, collaborating with writers during consultations, and teaching important writing strategies and concepts
- Contribute to the creation of a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment for learning
- Lead writing workshops and assist with marketing events
- Participate in pre-service training and ongoing education, trainings, and professional development
- Participate in committees and special projects, bringing your ideas, interests, and skills to expand the collective knowledge and abilities of the Writing Center
- Ability to work approximately 8 hours/week and at least one evening/week

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Graduate student at KU, enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
- Excellent written communication skills as evidenced in application materials
- As demonstrated in application materials, a commitment to the improvement of one’s own writing and professional development as a writing consultant
- Willingness to work in multiple modalities (face-to-face, online, videoconference)
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Federal Work-Study eligible applicants who have accepted an award for academic year
- Experience as a writing consultant in a college or community setting
- Teaching experience OR experience working with others one-on-one or in group settings
- Fluency in spoken and written Spanish. Formal training in academic writing in Spanish
- An investment in helping fellow writers reach their academic goals with strong listening skills, sensitivity, generosity, and flexibility
- Experience working productively with diverse populations
