Peer Health Education Coordinator - Student Hourly


Position Overview

Peer Health Education (PHE) Coordinators are student hourly positions working in the Health Education Resource Office, a department within the Student Affairs division.
Through student outreach, peer involvement, events, and presentations PHE Coordinators and volunteers – known as PHE Ambassadors – strive to increase personal responsibility, establish life-long healthy habits, and make learning possible by ensuring the health and well-being of KU students.
This in-person position is 12-20 hours per week at $10/week with preference given to students with mid-day Monday-Friday availability, as well as evening flexibility. The position starts in the fall semester with some Jayhawk Welcome work available before the start of classes. Work is not available during fall break, winter break, spring break, or summer break.

Job Description

PHE Coordinator responsibilities include the following:
  • Holding office hours to welcome students to the HERO suite located in Watkins Memorial Health Center.
  • Collaborating with HERO professional staff Health Educators to implement programs and events.
  • Organizing the PHE Ambassadors and communicating pertinent information needed to complete their volunteer duties.
  • Building kits (safer sex kits, fentanyl test strip kits, tobacco cessation kits, etc.) for dissemination throughout campus.
  • Staffing evening Animal Therapy events (i.e. Pause4Pups and Stress Busting Study Breaks).
  • Delivering safer sex kit products across campus to departments and residence halls.
  • Researching relevant health issues for college students and assisting in assessment of programs.
  • Assisting in the planning & execution of HERO signature events (i.e., Wellness Fair in fall and Sex in the Dark in the spring).
  • Communicating accurate health information at in-person events, via email communication, on social media, or through presentations.
  • Checking the PHE email and responding appropriately.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

1. Enrolled in 6 credit hours or more at the KU-Lawrence campus.
2. Availability to work in 3 hour blocks of time, including some nights and weekends.
3. Possess excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills as evidenced in application materials.
4. Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings as evidenced in application materials.
5. Must submit a resume AND cover letter in application.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Sophomore, junior, senior or graduate level student.
2. Work study eligible.
3. Previous experience in health education.
4. Volunteer Peer Health Educator.
