POOL – Undergraduate Student Researcher with Prof. Bean


Position Overview

The Kansas University High Energy Physics (KUHEP) group, with support from the National Science Foundation, is seeking outstanding KU undergraduate students for research experiences. The Undergraduate Student Researcher position will start with the student’s application for either summer or fall semesters, with possible continuation into future semesters, depending on funding and progress made by the student. Consideration will be given for continuing this appointment at the end of each semester, by the supervisor.

Job Description

The student(s) would participate in research projects in collaboration with the KUHEP group and other US and international physicists on the CMS experiment at CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, in Geneva, Switzerland. The CMS experiment involves a large multi-purpose detector for observing the collisions of protons and ions at the Large Hadron Collider. The research projects could include several possibilities including:

25% - Preparing physics outreach materials, addressing issues with the use of semiconductor pixel and timing detectors
25% Calibration and monitoring of various CMS subdetectors
25% Analysis of data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC
25% Other duties as assigned within the collaboration

Discussions with the professor will determine the particular projects or mix of projects that they may participate in.

Required Qualifications

  1. PHSX 191 or above completed coursework
  2. Must be in good academic standing
  3. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. GPA of 3.0 or better
  2. Physics or Engineering major
  3. Highly motivated student in another major
  4. Research experience
  5. Good language skills

Advertised Salary Range
