Student Community Action Corps Member- Student Hourly


Position Overview


The Student Community Action Corps Program facilitates the engagement of KU students with various community organizations, programs, or support in community-engaged efforts. Student employees will support their partner organization and/or program with various tasks and projects while receiving monthly training and support from Center for Service Learning staff.

The KU Center for Service Learning (CSL) promotes service learning and civic engagement opportunities on behalf of community-based nonprofit organizations, student service groups, and more. In partnership with the CSL, the Inclusive Service Recruitment Specialist will focus on building relationships and promoting service learning and civic engagement opportunities to students across campus. Specifically, they will strive to more meaningfully engage with student groups and populations historically underrepresented in higher education civic engagement spaces. These promotional activities will include in-person interactions, such as tabling and class visits, and communication through email, social media, and more.

Job Description


The Student Community Action Corps member will:
  • Develop and carry out an inclusive outreach strategy to engage a wide variety of student populations in service learning and civic engagement activities.
  • Gather and utilize feedback provided by student groups to inform and improve outreach strategy.
  • Conduct direct outreach through email, social media, and other strategies to build connections with student populations historically underrepresented from higher education civic engagement spaces.
  • Attend and speak at student organization meetings, introductory classes, etc. to promote service learning and civic engagement opportunities at KU.
  • Table at events and throughout the semester to promote service learning and civic engagement opportunities in a variety of spaces across campus.
  • Submit service learning and civic engagement opportunity information to campus newsletters.
  • Support direct service activities as needed.
  • Track and document promotion and outreach activities and outcomes.

Required Qualifications

  • The student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. For the fall semester, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours.
  • Excellent and accurate typing skills, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to complete projects independently with attention to detail as evident of the application material.
  • Basic experience with general office work and use of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest and passion for community service, civic engagement, advocacy, social justice, etc.
  • Responsibility and personal accountability for completing tasks; attention to details and deadlines.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and work in new areas to support team efforts.
  • Lived or prior leadership experience engaging meaningfully with historically underrepresented groups.
  • Prior participation in programs focused on social identities and interests.
