Student Hourly - Design and Outreach Assistant


Position Overview

The Kansas African Studies Center is seeking a student hourly (graduate or undergraduate student) with graphic design skills to create graphics, provide website assistance, and work on special projects as assigned in the Kansas African Studies Center (KASC). Duties will include working with Center social media accounts and other communications, creating promotional materials, and providing staff support for events. The Design and Outreach Assistant will work directly with full-time Center staff including the Assistant Director and the Outreach and Communications Coordinator.

Job Description

Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills and attention to detail. They must be both punctual and reliable and willing to perform a variety of duties and report to supervisor(s) when tasks are completed.

1) 40% - Duties include designing and producing publicity materials, assisting with center events and special projects related to African Studies outreach.
2) 30% - Working with Center staff on website and social media account maintenance.
3) 10% - Occasional office-related tasks may include checking mail, serving refreshments, and tidying the kitchen.
4) 20% - Build contact lists for networking and future projects.

Required Qualifications

  1. Must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 as evidenced by transcript(s).
  2. Experience with social media and marketing platforms such as Instagram, Mailchimp, Facebook, and Twitter as evidenced by application materials.
  3. Available to work 10-20 hours per week as stated in application materials.
  4. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Strong writing skills, as evidenced by cover letter and writing sample.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  7. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

1. Demonstrated interest in African Studies.
2. Familiarity with KU courses in African Studies and KU’s Africanist faculty.
3. Proficiency in a language other than English.
4. Experience working in an office environment.
5. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Programs.
6. Experience working with KU websites, WordPress, or other content-management systems as evidenced by application materials.
7. Demonstrated strong oral communication skills and ability to work effectively with the public.
