Pizza and Politics Student Coordinator
The Dole Institute of Politics hosts a variety of programs during the academic year, such as political discussions, interview sessions, and roundtable discussions. The Dole Institute of Politics’ Student Advisory Board (SAB) is a way for dedicated students to get involved and volunteer their time and energy. It is a group of students that are interested in politics, public service, and leadership, and take part in volunteer, educational, and social events as well as monthly meetings.

We are currently hiring one Pizza & Politics Student Coordinator.
The Dole Institute hosts Pizza and Politics (P&P) on 4-5 Fridays each fall and spring semester in the Kansas Memorial Union. Speakers for this series of programs include local professionals and public servants who speak to topics relevant to KU students. The coordinator reports to the Director of Programs and Student Affairs and works closely with the Dole Institute Director to produce and execute each P&P program.

It's required to be a current, active SAB member to apply for this position.

Job Description

Duties include:
  • Attend 1 SAB recruitment event and all SAB meetings each semester as a representative of the P&P series.
  • Brainstorming guest topics and speakers, working with the Director and Director of Programs and Student Affairs to approve P&P topics and guests.
  • Formally inviting P&P guest speakers and coordinating/booking event site(s).
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Programs and Student Affairs, execute P&P program logistics including booking event spaces; ordering catering; arranging for transportation of materials and speakers to/from campus with the assistance of staff; assisting speakers in preparing materials; hosting and facilitating programs; preparing speaker gift bags; sending thank you notes; and circulating and gathering attendee sign-in sheets at each program and updating database of attendees.
  • Plan strategic outreach and promotion of P&P programs by posting flyers, wearing the pizza suit, and utilizing social media to promote programs. All printed promotions must be reviewed and approved by the Director of Programs and Student Affairs.
  • Inform staff of upcoming P&P events, including through weekly memos, and documenting projects and activities.
  • Attend the weekly student marketing meeting.
  • During office hours, you are expected to provide administrative support including: answering the phone, greeting visitors, and assisting with special projects as assigned by staff.
  • Assist with general event set-up and tear-down including moving chairs, tables, and other event related furniture.
  • You will be expected to assist with some evening and weekend events throughout the semester by handing out programs, setting up chairs, handling microphones for Q & A, thanking attendees, and/or other duties as assigned by staff.

Required Qualifications

  1. Current enrollment in at least 6 credits in an undergraduate or graduate program at the University of Kansas
  2. Availability from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Fridays is required. And availability Tuesday-through Thursday evenings to work at Dole Institute Programs.
  3. Experience with Microsoft Office and Outlook programs.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Served at least one semester and be a member in good standing on the dole Institute Student Advisory Board.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Past participation in Pizza and Politics programs.
  2. Past participation in Dole Institute events or programs.
  3. Minimum of 15 months remaining as student at KU.
  4. Experience in event planning.
  5. Eligible for federal work study.

Advertised Salary Range

11.00 per hour

Work Schedule

7-12 hours per week, Monday-Friday, including both daytime office hours, meetings, and evening events. Availability from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on Fridays is required
