Position Overview

Founded in 1958, the University of Kansas Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) has a renowned history of leadership in area studies in the Midwest region and the nation. Designated as a Title VI National Resource Center by the U.S. Department of Education, CLACS’ mission is to promote the interdisciplinary production and dissemination of knowledge and language proficiency related to Latin America and the Caribbean and to make this knowledge accessible to a broad constituency by connecting communities of students, scholars, teachers, business professionals, and others in the heartland to communities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Job Description

Office assistants work with other undergraduate assistants, graduate specialists, the Office Manager, the Assistant Director, and the Director. The position provides distinct opportunities to develop social, academic and professional qualities and skills that are often desired by employers.
  1. design digital and paper fliers 35%
  2. posting fliers and announcements on the center’s social media sites 15%
  3. photocopying and posting paper fliers and posters on campus physical bulletin boards 15%
  4. Answering the phone and taking messages, tending the clacs@ku.edu email, transcribing audio files, and delivering mail 10%
  5. visiting courses 10%
  6. Printing & scanning materials for the functioning of center events and courses 10%
  7. sitting at information tables immediately prior to center events 1%
  8. Assist in organizing and staffing events, including carrying equipment and other materials 1%
  9. Perform other duties as requested by the Office Manager, Assistant Director, and Director 3%

Required Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate student enrolled at KU.
  2. Demonstrated academic / intellectual interest in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  3. Prior experience with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) as evidenced by application materials.
  4. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. A candidate with a current FAFSA on file, who has applied for and accepted an award for Federal Work-Study.
  2. Multicultural and/or multilingual experience
  3. Past involvement with CLACS activities, fellowships, and / or programming.
  4. Some proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole or an indigenous language from the region.
  5. Prior academic, work, or volunteer experience with Latin American indigenous cultures and/or with Latinx / Hispanic communities in the United States.
  6. Excellent written communication skills as evidenced in application materials
  7. Previous customer service experience
  8. Willing to learn and receive training in graphic design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.)
  9. Willing to quickly adapt to technology like Content Management System (CMS) and Microsoft Teams with training from KU Staff. Workers can take trainings for CMS from KU Technology Training Workshops during work hours.

Work Schedule

Flexible, will work around student’s schedule Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00 p.m. or as needed after hours or on weekends.
