Position Overview

KU Recreation Services, a department within Student Affairs, provides a campus-wide impact at the University of Kansas by improving the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, affiliates, retirees, alumni, spouses, and domestic partners. KU Recreation Services provides state-of-the-art recreational programs (Fitness, Intramurals, Outdoor Pursuits, and Sport Clubs), facilities, and services.

The Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center (ASRFC) is a $17 million facility which opened in September 2003. In 2008, a $6.3 million expansion was completed, increasing the total indoor space to 150,000 square feet. The ASRFC is comprised of many different activity spaces: 16,000 square feet of cardiovascular resistance training and free weight equipment, six indoor basketball/volleyball courts, a three-lane suspended jogging track, an aerobics studio, a martial arts studio, four racquetball courts, one squash court, a dasher board system gymnasium, a golf simulator, a 42-foot climbing wall and bouldering wall, two outdoor basketball courts, a conference room, and multimedia room.


Job Overview
A Student Maintenance Program manager will work within the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center during a given work shift. A Student Maintenance Program Manager shall enforce and implement policies and procedures or complete particular responsibilities so that the University population has the opportunity to participate in desired recreational programs, facilities, and services. This Program Manager is expected to work during the following periods: Fall and Spring Semester; and sometimes fall, winter, and spring breaks. Student manager will also work Monday-Sunday mainly in the afternoons with some morning, afternoon, evening, and late night hours. Student managers are expected to work weekend hours on a regular basis. Each student managers must be certified in CPR/AED or become certified within one month of appointment. General Responsibilities and Expectations
  • Completion of all duties assigned by General Maintenance Staff and KU Recreation Services administrative staff.
  • Maintain effective and appropriate communication with participants, guest, co-workers, and administration
  • All decisions, actions, and work habits shall maintain a high level of integrity and consistency.
  • Attend all scheduled meetings and work-shifts on time, while being ready to learn and work.
  • Act with personal responsibility.
  • Implementation of risk management procedures and protocols when necessary.

Administrative Duties
  • Ability to use critical and logical thinking when dealing with both participants and staff issues while following procedures.
  • Oversee and manage all Maintenance Assistants responsibilities.
  • Ensure completion of assigned tasks specific to Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center.
  • Assist with initial training of Maintenance Assistant.
  • Assist with on-going management, evaluation, and training of Maintenance Assistants.
  • Ensure staff is on task with responsibilities/expectations specific to program area.
  • Delegation of appropriate tasks to Maintenance Assistants as necessary.
  • Assist with dissemination of information to Maintenance assistant daily supervisory report, supervisor shift checklist, and incident/accident reports when necessary.
  • Ensure that recycling duties are completed each week.

Maintenance & Cleaning:
  • Dust, clean and sanitize CRT equipment, indoor track, window frames, handrails, televisions, and rest rooms etc….
  • Occasionally cleaning and sanitizing will involve bodily fluids, toilets, and urinals.
  • Painting various items within the SRFC.
  • Dust and clean hard wood floors.
  • Clean glass and walls of racquetball courts
  • Clean glass basketball backboards
  • Clearly articulate, enforce and educate patrons on all rules, policies and procedures.
  • Gum removal
  • Trash removal from various site
  • Recognize safety hazards which may cause injury including, but not limited to, the following: poor lighting, slippery floors, hazardous equipment, inclement weather, etc.
  • Snow & Ice removal
  • Replacement of lamps
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Consistently model positive and professional behavior.
  • Maintain regular and frequent communication with Supervisor.
Risk Management
  • Ensure a safe environment exists for participants through preventative supervision.
    • Recognize safety hazards which may cause injury: wet and dirty floors, tripping hazards.
  • Familiar with effective decision-making techniques in dealing with accidents.
  • Recognize symptoms of risk through equipment maintenance.
    • Know and be able to implement all Risk Management protocol.
    • Direct all KU Recreation Services staff as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrolled in 6 credit hours or more
  • CPR/AED certification or will to obtain within one month of hire (training is provide)
  • Good oral communication skills as evident in interview process
  • Flexible Work Schedule

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eligible for Work-Study Program
